Unawatuna is a popular seaside resort in the south of Sri Lanka. The white sandy beach, turquoise lagoon and palm trees create a tropical vacation feeling. But Unawatuna also has a lot to offer underwater.
Diverse underwater world
Numerous diving spots can be reached from Unawatuna, which are suitable for beginners and advanced divers alike. The underwater world is diverse and is home to a variety of marine life, including:
- Turtles: Sea turtles are frequently encountered in Unawatuna. You can watch them feeding, swimming or sunbathing.
- Rays: Unawatuna is a popular spot for ray dives. You can observe various species of rays here, including blacktip reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks and leopard sharks.
- Corals: The coral reefs off Unawatuna are intact and provide a habitat for a variety of marine animals. Here you can observe colorful corals, sponges, anemones and fish.
Recommended diving spots
Galle Ship Wreck: The wreck of a British warship from the Second World War lies at a depth of 20 meters and is a popular diving destination. The ship is well preserved and offers an exciting insight into its history.
Ralagala Wreck: The wreck of a Sinhalese fishing boat lies at a depth of 15 meters and is a good place to observe turtles and other marine animals. The boat is in good condition and offers good shelter for marine life.
Napoleon Reef: The reef is known for its large Napoleon wrasse that live in the coral reefs. The fish are very curious and often come within a few centimetres of the divers.

If you are not yet able to dive, you can take a diving course in Unawatuna. There are several diving schools that offer courses for beginners and advanced divers.

Weligama is a small fishing village in the south of Sri Lanka. It is known for its beautiful beach, but also for its diverse underwater world. The sea off Weligama is a popular destination for divers looking for challenges.
Diving spots for advanced divers
Dispa Rock: Dispa Rock is a popular diving spot for advanced divers. The reef lies at a depth of 32 meters and is known for its great variety of marine life. Here you can observe whale sharks, manta rays, turtles, barracudas and many other fish.
Yala Rock: Yala Rock is another diving spot for advanced divers. The reef lies at a depth of 20 meters and is known for its colourful corals and variety of fish. Here you can observe lobsters, turtles, moray eels and many other sea creatures.
Patch Point: Patch Point is a dive site for advanced divers, characterized by its steep topography. The reef drops off in steep slopes and provides a habitat for a variety of marine life. Here you can observe sharks, rays, barracudas and many other fish.
Weligama is a diver's paradise for advanced divers. The underwater world is diverse and offers a variety of challenges. Beginners should consult a diving instructor who will familiarize them with the local conditions.
